UNCLE RICO’S SPIKED SELTZER

Uncle Rico’s Spiked Seltzer is a packaging design project that I created during college inspired by the great Uncle Rico in the movie Napoleon Dynamite. I refined this design in May of 2024. The objective of the project is to evoke feelings of nostalgia along with the strength to throw a football over them mountains. The primary focus was to immerse the consumer in Uncle Rico's world, imagining themselves enjoying a seltzer with him by his van in Idaho.

A balanced composition was achieved by spotlighting Uncle Rico on the can with supporting elements using a square grid format inspired by Josef Müller-Brockmann. Typography choice centered around variations of the Gills Sans Nova and Mostra Nuova, establishing hierarchy with key elements like the name of the flavor and Uncle Rico’s headline. A split complementary color scheme was utilized to develop a cohesive palette for the flavors. By softening the intensity of each color, they achieved a vintage 70s vibe, giving the palette a nostalgic, muddy appearance.
